Pt. Lakhmi Chand
Lakhmi Chand was born in
‘Janti’ जांटी village which now falls
in Sonepat district of Haryana. River Yamuna is a few kilometers from this
village but in the first decade of 1900 A.D., the village used to be on
Yamuna’s banks. The river has now changed its streams a few kilometers away,
towards Uttar Pradesh. Lakhmi Chand was a Brahmin and had the exceptional
qualities of a poet. In the decades of 1940s and 1950s, he became famous
because of his folk dramas called “Saang”.
The biography of Lakhmi
Chand can be read in the book “Kavi Surya Lakhmi Chand” written by Shri K.C.
Sharma. The earlier work of the author was ‘‘Haryana Ke Kavi Surya Lakhmi
Chand’’ which was written in 1982 and the author was honoured with Haryana
Hindi Sahitya Akademi Award for this creative work.
Popularly known as “Dada
Lakhmi Chand”, he was a man of all ages and he ranked among the rarest of the
rare. People of north India
in general and Haryana in particular, would always be indebted to him for his
contribution to the tradition of ‘‘saang’’ सांग, narration of spiritual themes and
communication of social virtues.
